It’s been a year since Daxxers from Kharkiv are taking care of the prehensile-tailed porcupines at Feldman Ecopark. We donate funds to support animals in their new home in Kharkiv. Curious to know about porcupines as a species and more? Keep reading to find out!
Feldman Ecopark is a regional landscape park in the Kharkiv region. It’s a multi-purpose charity project that includes care for animals, therapy for children with special needs, rehabilitation, research and educational services, as well as leisure activities for all those who love wildlife.
The prehensile-tailed porcupines are one of the inhabitants of Feldman Ecopark. Originally, they came from the forests of Colombia and Venezuela. Like all their relatives, they lead a seсlude, mostly nocturnal lifestyle. They spend most of their time on trees, which is why they’re also called arboreal. Their prehensile tail helps them deftly climb through the branches. These relatively small animals protect themselves with needs by curling up into a spiny ball. So you’d better put on thick mittens for close communication with them. However, they allow those who constantly look after them to pet themselves.
What about feeding? The prehensile-tailed porcupines are vegetarians. They eat leaves, tree buds and fruit. Also, they ravage banana and corn plantations from time to time. At Feldman Ecopark, the foundation of their diet is vegetables (beetroots, cucumbers, zucchini, cauliflower, lettuce) and other plant food. Nuts and citrus fruit are their favorite sweets. Porcupines live in spacious and cozy shelters there.
Halyna Pluzhnikova, Employer Brand Lead at Daxx, points out: “We’re happy to take care of these rare animals. Every month, Daxx is donating funds to support the prehensile-tailed porcupines. Feldman Ecopark keepers are very attentive and caring. They feed, clean and look after porcupines. Daxxers also pay a visit to the park from time to time, so we know for sure that everything is fine.”
Porcupines are not the only habitants of Feldman Ecopark Daxxers have been taking care of. Our teammates also gave a helping hand to fennec foxes — cute animals with large and sharp ears.
Little or big, each good deed matters.
